A Eurasian Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) in the taiga forest of Finland photographed early evening in June. This male was occasionally vocalising and actively following a young female bear during the mating season, which for brown bears starts around mid-May and continues through to early July.
This photograph captured the only time this particular male actually looked in the direction of the hide in over an hour of observation and appeared completely relaxed throughout.
Male brown bears can normally be differentiated from females by their sheer size with males generally ranging from 260 to 360 kgs with females ranging from 150 to 150 kgs. However males have occasionally been recorded up to 481kg.
